ABP Newport Wales Marathon Launched with New Half Marathon Option for 2024

Keen runners looking to take part in a mammoth challenge next year can now sign up to take part in the ABP Newport Wales Marathon.

The event will be returning on Sunday 28 April 2024 and entries are now open.

For the first time an exciting new half marathon option will be added to the existing marathon and 10K offering.

Participants can now sign up for the marathon and half marathon distance, with those registering early able to take advantage of special early-bird pricing. The 10K and junior race entries will launch later this year.

Event organisers, Run 4 Wales, are planning a real festival of running which has only been made possible with the support of Associated British Ports and Newport City Council. The weekend will be bigger and better than ever before with a series of races and supporting activities.

Matt Newman, Chief Executive at Run 4 Wales, said: “We’re so excited to be bringing back our marathon event to the streets of Newport and bringing even more choice to runners by introducing the new half marathon distance.

“Our events in Newport are famed for their flat and fast courses, so they’re not to be missed for those looking to secure a PB. In fact, more than 70% of marathon finishers have achieved a personal best since our first race in 2018.

“We’re so grateful for the support of Associated British Ports and Newport City Council as we look to grow this into one of the UK’s most significant spring running events.”

Helen Thomas, Head of Property for ABP’s Wales & Short Sea Ports commented: “ABP is proud to return as the Title Sponsor for the expanded Newport Marathon. We’re delighted to continue our support for this fantastic event, which is a significant fixture in the annual running calendar and a flagship event for Wales, that also provides a major boost in tourism for the City of Newport. The inclusion of a half marathon, will mean that it’s a real festival of running.”

Councillor Jane Mudd, leader of Newport City Council, added: “We’re very pleased to continue our long-standing support of the Newport Wales Marathon.

“The marathon has proved to be a very popular event since the first race in 2018, helping to raise the profile of both Newport and Wales as a world-class visitor destination.

“I’m sure the buzz and excitement on race day will be even louder than in previous years, and we can’t wait to welcome the world back to Newport next April!”

The half marathon will offer a flat and fast course, starting and finishing in the heart of the city on Newport’s vibrant riverfront and take in the stunning scenery of the nearby Gwent Levels.

The marathon course has also been refreshed, taking in similar highlights as in previous years but with a number of adjustments to improve atmosphere and event experience whilst still offering a flat and fast route perfect for PBs and first timers. The changes will provide additional opportunities for spectators and the local community to engage with Wales’ largest marathon.

The first 500 people to register for the marathon distance will be able to take advantage of a special launch entry offer, with spaces priced at just £39 – a 25% saving on general entry price.

Early Bird Entry is also available for the half marathon distance where runners will be able to enter for just £38, saving themselves £6 on general entry price.

Those keen to take on both the ABP Newport Wales Marathon and Principality Cardiff Half Marathon in 2024 can purchase a Welsh Distance Double Ticket for just £78 – saving over £20 versus general entry. Runners who are already registered for the Cardiff Half, which launched earlier this month, will receive email instructions on how to upgrade to a Welsh Distance Double Ticket.
