About the role
Run 4 Wales is looking for a Media Volunteer to join our Marketing & Communications team at the 2026 Cardiff Half Marathon.
This is a fantastic opportunity for a journalism, media, communications or similar student to gain hands-on experience working behind the scenes at one of Wales’ biggest mass participation sporting events.
You’ll be right at the heart of the action, helping us find the stories that make the Cardiff Half Marathon special – from inspiring runners and charity fundraisers to community groups, first-time participants and memorable moments from race day.
Please note that this position is unpaid.
What you’ll be doing
Working alongside the Marketing & Communications team, your role could include:
- Capturing content on race day for use across Run 4 Wales and Cardiff Half Marathon social media channels.
- Interviewing runners and case studies to uncover interesting, inspiring and newsworthy stories.
- Identifying and sourcing potential stories that could be shared with local, national and specialist media.
- Speaking to participants, volunteers, spectators, charity runners and other event stakeholders to gather quotes and insights.
- Helping the communications team spot potential media opportunities and human-interest stories as they happen.
- Capturing short-form video, photos, quotes and other content for social media.
- Supporting the team with general media and communications activity throughout the event.
- Working quickly and confidently in a busy, live event environment.
Who we’re looking for
We’re ideally looking for someone who:
- Is studying journalism, media, communications or a related subject.
- Has an interest in sport, storytelling, social media and/or news.
- Is confident approaching and talking to new people.
- Has a natural curiosity and an eye for a good story.
- Can ask engaging questions and draw out interesting answers.
- Has strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Is comfortable capturing content on a smartphone. (Please note that own smartphone is required)
- Can work independently while also being part of a busy team.
- Is enthusiastic, proactive and happy to get stuck in.
- Has an interest in building practical experience within sports communications, journalism or PR.
Previous experience isn’t essential – we’re more interested in your enthusiasm, curiosity and ability to spot a good story.
You’ll be given a pre-event briefing and will keep in touch with the R4W marketing team via a media WhatsApp group on event day as well as face-to-face.
What you’ll gain
This is a great opportunity to gain real-world experience, working alongside an experienced Marketing & Communications team at a major sporting event.
You’ll have the opportunity to:
- Build experience in sports journalism, PR and communications.
- Develop your interviewing and storytelling skills.
- Create content for use across social media and potentially in media coverage.
- Experience the fast-paced environment of a major live sporting event.
- Add valuable practical experience to your CV and portfolio.
- All of our Extra Miler volunteers also receive an Extra Miler t-shirt, bag and refreshments.
