Volunteers week 2024: Thank you Extra Milers

This Volunteers Week (3-9 June) Run 4 Wales is shining a spotlight on its Extra Milers and thanking them for the fantastic work they do.

The Extra Milers are the incredible people who make up the Run 4 Wales volunteer team.

Each individual who generously gives up their time is vital to ensuring the success of our events. Without them, our races wouldn’t be possible.

Whether it’s manning the bag drop, helping runners to stay hydrated at a water station, handing out medals and t-shirts at the finish line, or keeping runners safe around the course, each person has an important role to play.

Pacers are also integral in helping participants achieve their desired time while the back marker volunteers are there to help motivate runners who are taking things more slowly.

Tor Hands, Run 4 Wales Volunteer Coordinator, said: “Our team of Extra Milers are invaluable and help make our events what they are. We can’t thank them enough for giving up their time freely to motivate, cheer on and look after both runners and spectators at our events.

“As well as helping to create buzz and excitement for the runners on the day, we find our volunteers get so much from the experience too, which is why they come back to take part time and again. Some of our Extra Milers have been part of the R4W family for over ten years! Not only do they love the feeling of giving something back to their community, but it’s a chance to make new friends, have a new experience and help improve mental wellbeing.”

At Run 4 Wales we believe you don’t have to run to get involved and want as many people as possible to be a part of our events. While many of our volunteers are runners themselves, others want to simply soak up the race day atmosphere, be part of something bigger and have a fun day out.

Both groups and individuals are welcome to get involved, and all race volunteers receive a t-shirt and bag as part of their volunteering kit, along with snacks and a lunch pack.

Tempo Time Credits are also issued every time you volunteer with R4W, as well as a 10% discount in the Run 4 Wales online merchandise store.

As part of the Extra Miler community, volunteers also get access to fun competitions and giveaways, including free R4W race entries, shopping gift vouchers, race merchandise bundles and delicious Welsh food hampers.

Matt Newman, Chief Executive at Run 4 Wales, added: “Our events are always memorable occasions, and the Extra Milers have a huge part to play in their success. We just want to say a huge ‘diolch yn fawr’ to every single one of our volunteers who have donated their time, energy and positivity at one of our events.”

All the events are listed on the R4W volunteer portal. It only takes a few minutes to create a profile to allow you to see all the events and volunteer opportunities available. You can also email volunteers@run4wales.org for more information.
